Mike & The Mechanics, "The Living Years" Mike & The Mechanics, "The Living Years"

Category: Songs That Will Make You Cry if You Have a Heart and Are Alive

Nickelback, "Rockstar" Nickelback, "Rockstar"

I think this song is hilarious, and didn’t even know it was Nickelback until looking for it on YouTube. BUT, it should be noted: I do like Nickelback! YEAH I SAID IT.

Helen Reddy, "I Am Woman" Helen Reddy, "I Am Woman"

Thanks to fellow poster i heart ed for thinking about how relevant this is right now. And Reddy really is such a beautiful singer. This is gorgeous.

Taana Gardner, "Heartbeat" Taana Gardner, "Heartbeat"

Because sometimes don’t you just wanna dance?

Disturbed, "The Sound of Silence" Disturbed, "The Sound of Silence"

Because it is stunning.

Survivor, "Eye of the Tiger" Survivor, "Eye of the Tiger"

Alabama Shakes, "Sound & Color" Alabama Shakes, "Sound & Color"

Presented purely because it is so shockingly beautiful. Much credit to the actor, Kenneth J. Morgan, for making this video as revelatory as it is.

Presented without comment for the moment. I’m still deciding how I feel about this one too. Other than that it compels me.

AWOLNATION, "Woman Woman" AWOLNATION, "Woman Woman"

HELP ME WITH THIS VIDEO Y’ALL. I seriously cannot decide how I feel about it. Is it straight-up objectification? Or does it subvert objectification by making the women the performers? Does it even, when one includes the lyrics, glorify women? Is it somehow weirdly all of those things? Should I just shut my head up and…

Johnny Cash, "Hurt" Johnny Cash, "Hurt"

All credit to Trent Reznor for writing it, but in my opinion this is the definitive version of the incredibly poignant song.

La Roux, "Bulletproof" La Roux, "Bulletproof"

This is so interesting to me, not only as a great pop song, but also because of the video. The overall style is very ‘80s (albeit slicked up considerably from that era), and so is singer Elly Jackson’s punky, defiantly unpretty but very deliberate makeup and hair, yet it’s a 2009 release.

Trapt, "Headstrong" Trapt, "Headstrong"

I grew up in a small town that was almost tribal in nature, the social demarcations were so intensely observed. I rebelled against this structure, choosing my friends for who they were, not for our assorted assigned positions, and while my parents were very proud of me for that, it got me a lot of backlash.

This Is Your Cat Typing

Okay, this is MY cat typing. Here’s what she left me (I had left Notepad open when I went to bed):

You Speak My Language You Speak My Language

I only met Mark Sandman once. All I can tell you is that he was good company.
